ASIST 2-day workshop
ASIST 11 Workshop English - 2 Day

ASIST is the world's leading suicide intervention workshop developed and managed by LivingWorks. ASIST is a two-day interactive workshop that is backed by evidence from independent and peer-reviewed studies that demonstrate ASIST helps participants become more willing, ready, and able to intervene with someone who is thinking of suicide. Confidence to effectively respond appropriately is increased by completing ASIST, which helps responders to attend more calmly to the person with thoughts of suicide and reduce becoming overwhelmed by the situation.

ASIST is effective. A 2013 study with 1,500 at risk callers found that by using the ASIST model, crisis line counsellors reduced suicidality in callers by 74% more than those trained in other models.

ASIST is:

  • a suicide intervention training
  • run over 2 consecutive days (15 hours)
  • suitable for anyone aged 16 or over
  • facilitated by at least two registered trainers with diverse backgrounds yet delivered under strict guidelines to ensure the schedule is consistently followed (provisionally registered trainers always co-facilitate with registered trainers)
  • delivered in a manner that introduces participants to the concepts before gradually inviting engagement with the activities and simulations in a safe and scaffolded manner

Learning Goals:

  • Understand how personal and cultural attitudes influence our views of suicide and the way an intervention may occur
  • Understand possible causes of thought of suicide, the prevalence of suicidal thoughts in community, and the importance of having appropriate skills to respond when needed
  • Recognise stages of the ASIST model and learn when and how to use the stages
  • Recognise the signals that suggest someone is having thoughts of suicide and learn ways to confirm this and respond
  • Provide guidance and suicide first-aid to a person with thoughts of suicide in ways that meet the needs of that person
  • Appreciate the importance of identifying life-promoting options and the value of self-care

ASIST participants receive a Workbook, pocket card, ASIST suicide caregiver sticker, Certificate of attendance (minimum attendance requirements must be met), plus morning and afternoon teas. Participants are to provide their own lunch.
